While cooking oil can be useful, it can also be difficult to dispose of. Cooking oil can solidify after a while. This could cause the pipes in your home to become clogged up. It might cause damages to your plumbing after a while.
You need to make sure you avoid disposing of your cooking oil the wrong way. There are several things that you have to do in order to make it a little easier for you to get used cooking oil out of the way in your home.
The First Steps
The first steps for taking care of your used cooking oil include a few steps made to prepare the right way. You must do the following:
- You have to let your oil cool off. It may take a few hours for this to happen.
- The oil must be strained. This should be done to get rid of any impurities in the oil. It works best for cases where you need to use your oil again later on.
- The oil then needs to be frozen. You can do this by placing the oil in a metal can that can handle a freezer’s conditions. This should be done because it’s easier to get rid of your oil when it is solid.
- The oil can then be taken out and removed after it is frozen. You could also choose to reuse it if you are capable of doing so. You’d have to thaw it out to do this.
Where Can You Bring It To?
You should be careful when preparing to bring your oil out to the right spot. There are many places that cooking oil can be brought to but you have to be careful when doing so. There are a few rules to think about when finding a place to get rid of used cooking oil in:
- You should bring a larger amount of oil to an appropriate landfill. A local landfill will be likely to take in a larger amount.
- A local restaurant that uses a great deal of cooking oil may also take in your oil and send it off to a proper disposal site for you.
- You may easily get cooking oil in your trash if you only have a small bit of it. A small amount should be good enough for your personal trash so you can avoid the problems that often come with getting large amounts out.
Seal the Oil
You must make sure that any oil that you throw out is perfectly sealed. This is to make sure that the oil is not going to leak out of a spot. You can get a plastic container set up to get the cooking oil moved out in.
It does not take too much effort to get rid of used cooking oil. All you have to do is use the right procedure for taking care of it while also using the right option for disposal depending on the amount of oil you have to get rid of.

Thank you for the post – I was dumping it into my drain and had a horrible back-up. I did not know any better…
Thank you for your tips on disposing oil. It is too bad that so many people think nothing of pouring large amounts of oil down the kitchen sink. I am in my 40′s and my Mom taught me not to do this over 30 years ago. Even back then it was known that this should not be done.
Thank you for your tips on the proper way to dispose of your cooking oil. I never knew that you were supposed to strain your oil, but I rarely cook anything that requires any large amounts of oil, but will remember to strain it before disposing of it… the next time.
An excellent container for disposing of oil is half-gallon ice cream containers. They don’t leak, they seal and they’re just the right size! AND you’re reusing that which you would be throwing away anyway! It’s a win-win!
Thank you for the tips. I hate pouring all of that grease down in my kitchen sink!!!
